Popoteke Gorge
Seventy-metre rock faces, endemic aloes, birdlife, and Sunset Cruises from the lodge.
Near Romelda, the Popoteke River cuts through the Beza Range and opens into Lake Mutirikwi. Steep rock faces, riverine forest, and rocky slopes create one of the most dramatic settings around the lodge. Evenings here are made for Sunset Cruises: soft light on the cliffs, hippo grunt from the reeds, and a chance of crocodile on the banks in the cooler months.

Landscape
Cliffs, River & Woodland
The gorge runs northwest to southeast where the Popoteke meets the lake landscape. Paths and cruises reveal boulders, steep walls, and plants that thrive on rock faces and river margins. It is a pocket of vertical drama next to the open water of Mutirikwi, and a favourite place for photographs at golden hour.

Wildlife
Birds, Crocs & the Shore
Watch for peregrine falcons and African harrier hawks on the cliffs, and listen for fish eagles over the water. Crocodiles breed in the area and are often visible on the banks from June to August. Hippo use quieter reed beds. Endemic aloes colour the rock in late winter, drawing the eye up the walls.

Cruise
Sunset & River Cruises
A two-hour Sunset or River Cruise on the Popoteke or Mutirikwi is one of Romelda’s signature outings: scenic birdwatching with chances of hippo, crocodile, bushbuck, zebra, and other small game, with drinks and snacks included. It is the easiest way to feel the gorge without a long transfer, and it pairs perfectly with a quiet dinner back at the Tented Lodge.
