UNESCO World Heritage
The largest ancient stone city in sub-Saharan Africa: Hill Complex, Valley Ruins, and the Great Enclosure.
About 40km from Romelda, Great Zimbabwe is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the namesake of the country. Built by ancestors of the Shona people between roughly 1100 and 1450 AD, the dry-stone city once held more than 10,000 people and traded gold and goods toward the East African coast. Walls rise without mortar. The soapstone Zimbabwe Bird found here still appears on the national flag.

Great Enclosure
The Great Enclosure is the largest ancient monument in Africa south of the Sahara. Its elliptical dry-stone wall runs hundreds of metres, rising in places to around 11 metres. A narrow passage between inner and outer walls leads toward the famous conical tower, a solid stone structure whose exact purpose is still debated. Most scholars see the complex as a seat of royal prestige and authority.

Hill Complex
Perched on a granite hill, the Hill Complex is the oldest part of the site and is thought to have served as a royal and spiritual centre. Narrow passages link small enclosures. The climb is steeper than the Great Enclosure, but the views over the lowveld and surrounding woodland reward the effort. Start at the site museum for context before you walk.

Valley & Visit
The Valley Ruins stretch between hill and enclosure and show how families lived within stone courtyards: kitchens, living huts, and enclosed courts. Nearby, the Shona Village and craft centres add living culture to the archaeology. Most visitors spend two to four hours on site. Monument entrance fees are separate; Romelda’s Cultural Day Trip can include Great Zimbabwe with packed lunch and drinks.
